So wouldn't it be great if we could have an alternative venue where we could sell our stuff?

The stuff we create while we are looking for the next gig, and our creative juices are overwhelming us........and we invent, design, etc.

Wouldn't it be great that despite the fact that we do very limited editions, because we have such a busy schedule.........that we could still have a place where we could sell our stuff? And keep our copyrights.............

Wouldn't it be great!...........

yes! i haven't even had time to post photos here! you're right, everything i do is pretty limited edition, or a few pieces, etc. i've often thought of trying an internet site.. but it really requires at least one person to be totally dedicated to management, etc. (and probably a full time job...)...

got any ideas how to do it michele?? i wish i could think of a way...

      YES!
But how do you filter out all the crap that people think is great, but will never sell?

hmmm, well, my personal feeling is that "art" is a subjective term. what some people consider art, to others, it's just garbage. i think the best way to handle this is to allow everyone to put their things in the market place, and it if it sells, great, and if not, oh well...
also, don't forget, a lot of great art never sells... so are we going to be about "sales" or about art? not sure... what does everyone else think.

"...a lot of great art never sells... so are we going to be about "sales" or about art? not sure... what does everyone else think. "

Can we answer this question first?

I'm about sales of art. Not just about art.

ah, so then we need to figure out, if we are going to do some marketing or selling, etc. what exactly we want to do. are we only going to take on art that sells? or are we going to take on all art and sell some, but not necessarily all...??

ok, everyone, curious what you all think...

Depending on what type of work you are talking about, most designers have such a venue.

If you want it- find it or create it!

Find it or creat it!!!!!!! Love this!!!!!

      Sell it!!!!!!!

What about spreading the word out into the world about us.....do you think people out there care about us designers and creators in the ENt. biz?
We are the creative force in the film industry, with a chaotic schedule, that leaves us very little time to follow up a massive production of anything.

For many of us is "Feast or Famine" as they say........

I don't know if most designers have such a venue as a lot of people think....

I know a lot of extremelly talented individuals with amazing ideas and no marketing structures that allow them to place their ideas -as products- into the market, and so many ideas stay as "ideas" with no venue at all.

So I think that if a market place was created to sell these "products" then the venue would come.

Keep in mind Michele that this is the age of the virtual manufacturer. If you have an idea, there is someone out there able to make it and send it, so you don't have to. No stock or inventory, no manufacturing costs up front and no shipping to worry about. Look at two great expampls of on demand: Cafepress.com and Lulu.com, both of which I use.

Now, that doesn't help with hand made items, or items that can't be produced by these companies, but then again, you won't be mass producing items with crammed, hectic work loads either...

The problem you are going to run into every time here in getting the word out is marketing cash. You might have to do what i've done and just start talking...

An idea might be to get your group together and create a single center website, that people can come to, where you find and link all the available on demand source links. Then you all promote the very same place all the time and let the buyers choose for themselves.

Being in the entertainment industry--many of you know someone out there that could crack open a window for you in where to go to get the notice of others...

One of the bonuses of working together instead of individually, is that you have the collective 'credits' that would impress people. Like so:

"Come to DESIGNED BY HOLLYWOOD, where the creative minds of the motion pictures bring productst right to you! These are the inspired individuals behind such pictures as (insert credits here---and they ALL count)! Come to the one place where the greatest talents have joined forces to bring you the very best Hollywood has to offer!"

The more work you have all done individually, the more it will stregthen the whole group.

        Just a thought.

So sorry for the long time in replying to this post.
Well.........so to speak, all this has been an idea that I had for about 2 years now. There is a lot to think about and a lot of desicions to take when you commit to something of this magnitude. This is why I started the tribe in the first place.
Now Italians have a saying ........It's not beautiful, what is beautiful......it's beautiful, what you like!

      I hit send by mistake...dah!
I wanted to let you guys know that I'm a firm believer in the talents that we hold, and the unfair deals that we sometimes have to sign in order to survive in this business........like the work for hire contract in which we just give up all of our rights.
Not polemic at all just a point of view.. I think that the employer is right to defend their investment by holding the rights....but, they don't hold rights to the rest of our creativity.
This is where Designed by Hollywood comes into the game. So I have been trying to launch this project and I need help by people that are in the same page and that have a secondary business to market or talent ...
In my case, I'm a costume designer and illustrator. I also design jewelry, and have all this ideas in my mind. I need a vehicle, and cash to market it, but why should I go alone on this, when so many of us are in the same boat?????
So for starters this wonderful Tribe, and the website to showcase our product. check it out : www.dbyh.com
It's still in the works, and I made it with little dough. I'm open to opinions and suggestions, so please feel free.
The marketing is what is important, and that is in the works.......so now I really need people interested in being a part of it.
All of you with so many ideas and suggestions, I thank you so much.
Jaime, you got it immediately, like you were here reading my mind.
      Cheers.

        hey gang!
Can our Aussiewood team join up as well? We have virtually no support in Australia at all for our creations or anything we do....even our actors clear off to America.

I'm working on a series of international masquerade fantasy and medieval balls for my business, including one based on a medieval comedy I am writing due to be published later this year. Three producers want the script so far.

And we want to launch Celtic Sorcery fashions and jewellery into Hollywood next year.

Jaime is so right when he says it all comes down to money!
If you need money for DBH as a new venture, I have a financer in America I can send you to Michele.

In a movie I designed, the moto was:
It's not about the money...It's about the MONEY!!!!!

          Money makes money right?

Jaime is right, Maree is right.

DbyH needs money and marketing and the collective power of word of mouth.
I'm putting together my biz plan, well actually just refining it really.....
Those plans take so much energy to make.
Once that is done, we'll start knocking doors.

so any contacts or ideas are super welcome.

michele! that looks really nice! i like the simple white space and the logo is very hollywood.

now... i don't think it's fair for you to put out all the money for the website hosting, or the hours of design, etc. i'm thinking maybe if you (or whoever maintains the site), either charges like $1 per item to list, or some % or something that would make it more fair...
        what does everyone think??

Thank you all for your support, and for the wonderful ideas that you are bringing in.
I had several ideas for the logo and for the whole look. But I didn't want to use so much color or crazy logo, because I really wanted for the products to show off. A certain color theme, locks sometimes the look of everything else, and also the gender, I think.

So I tried to stay very minimalistic.........

Princess, you are so sweet......I'm glad you think the logo is very hollywood, because that's what it's about.

I'm now brainstorming on how to charge people to post, and also the logisitcs of this.

It will hopefully be done soon since my deadline is about a month.

Any ideas are very welcomed, also please post pictures of what you do, in this album, remember that people need to see what you create.

          So lets show our stuff!

Nice, clean cut and smooth Michele, well done!

Just got interviewed on a local radio station for my comic book...about 10 min ago. Was nervous as you could be---but wife said it still went well. Hopefully more traffic to add to the 38K+ visitors from last month.

I would like to place a link on my cartoon site for you too, Michele. I can't guarantee anything, especially since it's not the same subject matter---but I think your idea is really fun, so people should see it. You might get trickle from my site...you never know.

        Every bit helps.

When they release access from the server again, I'll post a link on my Hot Links page.

            Michele,
When it comes down to the artwork - less is best. Less than four colours in the logo is better because when it comes to embroidery, label creation and so forth - the more the colours the more the price.

www.cafepress.com is good for the basic stuff for merchandise and thats how I will go for mine eventually when they get black tshirts available.
But as far as a distributor goes for the merchandise to go into Hollywood itself ...leave that to me and I can put you in contact with my distributor James.

May I also make a suggestion which I come across today.....get some members creating really funky fantasy baby clothes as several superstars are pregnant, and several others are considering having a baby per Hollywood actresses. Create something unusual but practical and you could make an absolute mint with it. Also, when you have several lines to sell - I have contacts to put on a charity gala for a modelling show with these babies in the designer wear and you can invite some celeb guests who are already pregnant. Give them some freebies to attend.
Or throw a baby shower party to show them all off to pregnant celebs.

michele, thanks for the compliment... i actually haven't been selling them for about 2 years now. i tried a website, but nothing happened with that, so let it go. then i sold them at craft fairs, etc. but didn't have much luck. most of them go for $60 and i think people didn't want to spend that much. i also had a lot of people say "well... i really love the flowers, can you make me one without the giant chili pepper? or without the pears?"... but the whole point is the pepper or the pears, or whatever goofy thing i've put on there.

i also made a custom wedding purse for my best friend. it was a huge bunch of these guazy white flowers, the bottom was covered in pink crystals, so if the sun hit it, the would reflect pink... but the real fun? buried inside the flowers, if you parted them were bugs, birds, all kinds of little items like that. i should photograph it and post, too.

that's why i've been so interested in what you're doing. i'm looking for some place where i can post stuff and not have to upkeep my own web site, etc. (of course i'm happy to pay % or whatever)....

                  thanks again, P o E

I opened the cafe press store about a year ago, and I had samples made.
It's a fun concept the only thing is that the art is basically made with heat transfers which are a pain for production.

The baby concept is so cute. With all the ideas that you have, you should make your line........

                Hi Michelle,
I notice around the stores lately in Australia that little tot faery and princess dresses are all the rage.
I might try and find a really good seemstress and get my medieval costumes created that I have patterns for then do some for the little tots as well.

About 3 years ago they were selling Winnie The Pooh and Tigger jumpsuits for babies which were gorgeous.

I am also looking for a more reliable distributor to take care of my Celtic Sorcery jewellery and clothing range. I think I might just sell on line and be done with it.
